Modular approach to online coursework

The Kentucky Community and Technical College System has started offering self-paced, on-demand online courses in a modular format. Each normal course is broken up into several modules focused on a discrete topic or skill set and students can opt to take just the modules they are interested in or take the full series to get the course credit. They can also spread out completion of a course over the long term if they want to--check out the example KCTCS gives at the very bottom of the page.

What do you think of this approach?

I think this is a GREAT idea! I wonder if we might adapt it to ELI courses. Perhaps this is one way to assure greater student success by not overwhelming a student with an entire course to complete in a single semester. 1 credit modules covering just PART of a course content, paid for 1 credit at a time. Do they (would we) allow an open-ended time frame for completion of any given module?
